Balinghem

This village became well-known due to the famous meeting known as the Field of the Cloth of Gold, which took place on 7 June 1520 between François I of France and Henri VIII of England. A modest commemorative stone is visible on the road between Ardres and Guînes.

On the road called «la route du camp du drap d’ Or», which leads into the village, the farm called «la ferme de la grande porte» sells delicious dairy products : thick-crusted tarts (a local  speciality) and cheese (known as “p’tit quinquin”). As you continue through the village, you will discover a grotto hollowed out of an old feudal mound, inspired by the grotto in Lourdes, with very old stations of the cross.

Do not leave the village without visiting the church, which was restored in 1704. It contains a Roman font and a beautiful rood screen which originally came from the Chapelle des Carmes in Ardres.
